Workouts are hard, and they should be. Even if you love getting out there and pushing your limits on a long run, steep bike ride, or a big hike, there will always be moments of suffering. It’s the struggle that makes the body stronger and it should be welcomed if you want to see those fitness gains.
Finding the strength to push through exhaustion and pain on long endurance sessions can be especially hard though. The battle becomes more about mental resilience as tiredness and boredom set in. It’s normal to want to slow down or give up, but this is exactly the moment when we should keep going. That’s where the true fitness gains lie.
I have a little secret that allows me to push through my darkest moments of endurance training so I can get the optimal fitness gains for my effort. It’s music! If I’ve got tunes, I can survive anything. My playlist makes me so happy, I forget that I should be in pain and I enjoy myself so much more.
Having a great set of tunes for your workout is a clever little mind hack. It distracts your brain with something that makes you feel good (music) and diverts your attention away from something that makes you feel bad (pain). It helps your brain directly associate your workout with good feelings, which will make you want to do it more to get those good feels again. You’re basically tricking your brain into loving hard workouts so you get fitter and healthier as a result.
